My latest obsession: Cutlery
Ok, so we all have that one favourite spoon we eat with, right? The whole big spoon vs. little spoon thing? I know it’s not just me. A lot of us already have our views on the cutlery we use, whether we realize it or not!
Well, I want to write about my random obsession with cutlery that has developed over some time.
My friend Charlotte (also a jeweller) got me thinking about this. She made a fork-knife spoon set as a gift last year, and I quickly became obsessed with the idea. After that, I discovered there’s a whole world of abstract cutlery, and it scratches an itch in my brain that I can’t describe. Something about the idea of eating with cutlery that is so creative and artistic; I find it would make my food taste a million times better.
When you really think about it, cutlery used to be a lot more intricate, delicate, beautiful, and high-quality. Of course, this luxury was reserved for the wealthy, having special and nice cutlery (and for different occasions at that). But they were on to something…
Here are some of my favourites (the list is endless…):
Food is such a creative medium, and I love the idea of pairing a meal I’m really proud of making with an insane-looking one-of-a-kind sculptural fork.
People think about the plates and bowls to eat out of… Many fine-dining, contemporary restaurants are very creative and intentional with plating and glassware, and for good reason…When will we add cutlery to the dining experience equation? Is there a way to make this more accessible for the everyday person? I hope that as my generation ages and acquires more disposable income, we will experience the finer things in life, like having a special cutlery collection.
